“Enlarge the place of your tent,
and let the curtains of your habitations be stretched out;
do not hold back; lengthen your cords
and strengthen your stakes.
Isaiah 54:2 ESV
“Be brave.” The words were already printed on the scrapbook paper Lori used to set our theme this year: Beyond Our Borders. Every time I look at our scripture, that word keeps standing out to me: brave.
Hebrew is a contextual language. One word can mean many things, and you know what the author meant by the rest of what he is saying. HEbrew is the language the Old Testament was originally written in, and I like to look up the words sometimes. It helps to bring out the colors of the original text, like the difference between an email and a phone call.
Today I decided to look up the Hebrew meaning of the word “strengthen” from Isaiah 54:2 in my Strong’s Concordance. Guess what it means?
Chazaq: to strengthen, bind, mend, be established, be consistent, take courage.
Be brave.
