Forever Girlfriends Winter 2014 Bible Study
Taking Hold – Knowing the Jesus of the Gospels
In his letter to the Philippians, the apostle Paul writes: “Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me” (3:12 NIV).
What did he mean by “taking hold of that”? Jesus wasn’t on earth anymore, so he couldn’t mean literally holding on to Him. Being a Christian wasn’t popular (just ask the martyrs who faced the lions in the Roman Coliseum), so he certainly wasn’t looking for fame.
Something happened to Paul on the road to Damascus. We know that. His life changed radically from what was considered a success, in his culture, to one of eternal significance. Paul took hold of a new paradigm. Jesus of Nazareth – a man Paul never knew while he walked the earth – demonstrated a radical way of living and relating to people that transformed Paul from a persecutor to a passionate lover of people and champion of the faith.
In this four-week study of the Gospels, we’ll dig deep into how Jesus interacted with people and discover together new ways to “take hold” of Him–to know Him and be like Him.
I truly look forward to seeing you there. I guarantee this study will change the way you read the gospels and relate to Jesus.
